Prof. Hirendra Nath Sarma, Vice Chancellor of Sri Sri Aniruddhadeva Sports University, Chabua, Dibrugarh, Assam, is an eminent scholar in the field of Biological Sciences. He earned his M.Sc. in Zoology and Ph.D. in female reproductive research from Gauhati University. In 1999, he began his post-doctoral research in Molecular Reproductive Development and Genetics at the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, supported by a fellowship from the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. His academic journey continued abroad during 2002–2003 at the Department of Paediatrics and the Reproductive Sciences Program, University of Michigan, USA , as a Biotechnology Overseas Associate under a fellowship awarded by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India. Subsequently, he was awarded the prestigious Commonwealth Post-Doctoral Fellowship by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission, United Kingdom, and carried out his post-doctoral research at Imperial College London during 2009–2010.
Professor Hirendra Nath Sarma has over thirty-seven years of distinguished teaching and research experience in the field of Zoology. He joined Rajiv Gandhi Central University in 1997 as one of the founder faculty members of the Department of Zoology and served the institution until his appointment as Vice Chancellor of Sri Sri Aniruddhadeva Sports University, Assam, on 28 November 2025.During his tenure at Rajiv Gandhi University, he served in several key academic and administrative roles, including Head, Department of Zoology, and Dean of the Faculties of Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Information Technology, and Engineering & Technology. He also played a pivotal role in establishing multiple academic departments such as Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, and Computer Science & Engineering. Professor Sarma made significant contributions to university governance as a member of various statutory bodies, including the Academic Council, Executive Council, and Research Board, and served as Chairman of several important committees. Internationally recognized for his research in Endocrinology and Female Reproductive Biology—particularly on the endometrial milieu, decidual cell reactions, and their modulation by natural products—he has successfully supervised eighteen doctoral scholars at Rajiv Gandhi University. His scholarly contributions include over one hundred research publications in national and international journals, authorship of six books and book chapters, and editorial leadership as Editor-in-Chief of two journals and a Biological Sciences newsletter. He has completed numerous research projects and was instrumental in establishing the “Centre with Potential for Excellence in Biodiversity,” along with a Central Instrumentation Facility at Rajiv Gandhi University, supported by grants from the University Grants Commission, New Delhi, during 2012–2019.
In recognition of his extensive research contributions to the Eastern Himalayas, Professor Sarma was awarded the Charles Darwin Gold Medal by the International Society for Ecological Communication, India.
Professor Sarma started availing academic and research Fellowship away back in the year 1989 after getting qualified in UGC-CSIR joint Junior Research Fellowship for doctoral research. During the tenure, Professor Sarma was offered the Visiting Professorship in the Institute of Reproductive and Developmental Biology of Imperial College. As a recognition of his international stand on research in Reproductive Biology, Professor Sarma was elected as member of Society for Endocrinology (SFE), United Kingdom and regular member of the Society for the Study of Reproduction (SSR) in United States of America and Life member of Indian Society for Study of Reproduction and Fertility, (INDIA).
